If you have been looking for an excuse to head to the beach, using the three-day weekend that Memorial Day provides is as good of a reason as you need! This post is going to highlight the best Memorial Day celebrations in Myrtle Beach to help you plan the perfect trip to the gem of the Grand Strand this year. Personally, one of my favorite things about celebrating Memorial Day in Myrtle Beach is that most of the events are completely free of charge. This makes spending Memorial Day in Myrtle Beach with the family a very cost-effective and affordable decision! From parades to parties to picnics to races, there is a little something for everyone to do in Myrtle Beach over Memorial Day weekend, and we think you are bound to have a good time.
1. Military Appreciation Days Parade
On Saturday, May 28, 2022, you can enjoy Myrtle Beach’s own Military Appreciation Days Parade! This annual parade is going to include the US Marine Corps Parris Island Marine Band as its feature ensemble. The parade begins at 10:30am and marches through the Market Common and Farrow Parkway. The Parris Island Marine Band is commonly referred to as one of the best military bands in the United States, and they travel all around the world to play their music. Having them in Myrtle Beach will be a real treat! This event is free to attend and is great for all ages, including families with little ones!
2. Military Appreciation Days Family Picnic And Exhibits
Right after the Military Appreciation Days Parade, attendees can join in the fun on Farrow Parkway, where there will be a picnic and an exhibit to commemorate all of our country’s brave servicemen and servicewomen from throughout history. The picnic will take place in the Valor Memorial Garden, and people of all ages are welcome. This is a great way to celebrate alongside some of our country’s heroes, and families are welcome. As of now, the event is slated to take place at 11:30am on Saturday, May 28, 2022, but that is subject to change is the parade is moved or delayed for any reason.
3. Surfside Beach Memorial Day Golf Cart Parade
The Surfside Beach Memorial Day Golf Cart Parade is an annual event that takes place right in the heart of Surfside Beach, which is just a few minutes south of Myrtle Beach. This year, the parade will be held on Monday, May 30th, from 2:00pm to 3:00pm. To participate with your own golf cart, you need to line up along 16th Avenue North, and then parade runs south on Ocean Boulevard. There is no registration required for participants bringing their own golf carts. If you are simply looking to attend, grab a spot anywhere along Ocean Boulevard south of 16th Avenue North. Participants are instructed to decorate their golf cart in the most patriotic way possible to honor our country’s brave servicemen and servicewomen.
4. Brookgreen Gardens Memorial Day 5K
This year marks the ninth annual Brookgreen Gardens Memorial Day 5K, and it is going to take place on Sunday, May 29, 2022 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Locals will tell you that Brookgreen Gardens is one of the most beautiful places in all of the Grand Strand, and that is part of what makes this race one of the best races in the area. Brookgreen Gardens has over 9000 acres of stunning grounds, including a wildlife preserve, flower gardens, a sculpture garden, and countless walking trails. If you’ve read our posts before, you should already know that we just love this place. This race tends to fill up quickly, so you want to make sure that you grab your spot in time! There will be prizes for overall winners in both male and female categories, sweetening the pot for runners who think they have a chance to win it all!
5. The Veterans’ March And The Battlefield Cross Ceremony
This event is much less of a celebration and more of a solemn memorial to American servicemen and servicewomen who have lost their lives on the battlefield. In this event, veterans march on Ocean Boulevard together in remembrance of those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. While the event is for veterans, the public is also encouraged to attend to show support for the veterans who are marching. The march ends at the Burroughs and Chapin Pavilion Place, where spectators can also watch the annual Battlefield Cross Ceremony. Again, these two events are much more somber, and are done in remembrance of fallen soldiers, not celebration of those who survived. This year’s Veterans’ March and subsequent Battlefield Cross Ceremony kick off at 9:00am at 16th Avenue North on Monday, May 30th.
6. Memorial Day Eve Bash
This year’s Memorial Day Eve Bash will take place on Sunday May 29 at 4:00pm at the Tin Roof. This event will be filled with music, drinks, delicious food, and the best views in Myrtle Beach, so they say! Guests can expect live music from Phillip Michael Parsons, DJ VZZN in the Green Room, and more. The Tin Roof specializes in Southern inspired food that is made from scratch and “better than bar food.” If you are looking for a party to celebrate your three day weekend, this should not be missed! 7. Head to a Myrtle Beach Pelicans Baseball Game
Myrtle Beach’s minor league baseball team, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, do a great job of making the game of baseball fun to watch; whether you are alone, on a date, out with friends, or watching as a family. Friends of ours at The Present Perspective ranked attending a Myrtle Beach Pelicans game as one of the best things to do in Myrtle Beach, regardless of the time of year, and we could not agree more! While they will not be at home during Memorial Day Weekend this year, they will be back in town for a game on Tuesday the 31st. If you are still in town, this is a great way to get out with the family and enjoy the beautiful weather than Myrtle Beach has to offer.
8. Play a Round of Golf at One of Myrtle Beach’s Many Renowned Golf Courses
If you haven’t played a round of golf in Myrtle Beach yet this year, you should do it now while you still can. Myrtle Beach is known as one of the best golf destinations in the United States, and you want to get in on the action before all of the other golfers figure out this secret! On top of that, Memorial Day weekend marks the start of the busy season, when tee times fill up weeks in advance and the price to play a round of golf shoots up as a result.
The weather at this time of the year is simply gorgeous, with low humidity levels and plenty of sunshine. Honestly, golfing in May in Myrtle Beach is so much better than July, when you might break a sweat just standing on the course. What is the Weather Supposed to Be Like This Year For Memorial Day in Myrtle Beach?
The weather in Myrtle Beach this Memorial Day weekend is expected to be fantastic! The professionals are predicting some rain on Friday and Saturday, but Sunday and Monday are set to be crystal clear skies. All four days are supposed to be up in the mid 80’s, meaning that you should absolutely be able to get out and enjoy some great sunshine. The rain on Friday and Saturday is not expected to last for the majority of the day, meaning the rain clouds really should not stand in your way of having a great Memorial Day celebration this year if you choose to come down to the Grand Strand.
In fact, the weather in Myrtle Beach might be even more tolerable than in some places further north this year, as a heatwave is supposed to hit the Mid-Atlantic region and bring temperatures in the high 90’s to states like Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. Heading south for this Memorial Day weekend might actually give you a chance to cool off if you are from one of these states!
