Most People Don’t Know That These Castles Are In South Carolina
When people think of castles they immediately get a picture in their mind of fairytale-like stone structures, soaring towers, as well as kings and queens. People definitely do not think of South Carolina when they think of castles and, while the castles that are found in South Carolina are not as grandiose as in other regions, they are definitely just as noteworthy.
1) Castle Pinckney: Built in 1810 on Shutes Folly Island, this castle was built to protect the harbor from naval attack. However, there was no action to be seen for this castle and it was abandoned to nature.
2) Atalaya Castle: Built on Huntington Beach Near Murrell's Inlet, SC, between 1931-1933 as a winter home for Anna Hyatt Huntington, an American Sculptor, and her husband. This Spanish-style castle boasts 30 rooms!
3) Greenville Castle: This castle was built for a German Baroness in 1902. It sits on the south face of Paris Mountain just a short 10-minute drive from Greenville, SC. It certainly holds all the romance of a fairytale.
4) Castle Mugdock: Have you ever dreamed of staying in a castle? Built in 1891, this castle is nestled on the gorgeous Sullivan's Island.

5) Old Jail Castle of Walterboro, SC: Built by J. & B. Lucas in 1855 this castle boasts crenellated parapets, turrets, and a massive central tower.
6) The "Castle" of Beaufort, SC: Although, not a 'true' castle, I thought this magnificent mansion would be of note in this list. It was built in 1860 and got its name, The Castle, due to the moat-like effect of the Beaufort River that runs beside the property.
